Description

A delightful and cozy dessert featuring tender, spiced apples baked to perfection under a golden, nutty crumble topping. This dish balances the natural sweetness of Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples with the richness of almond flour, hearty oats, and a blend of warm cinnamon. It is an ideal treat for family gatherings or autumn evenings, offering a sophisticated texture with every bite.

Ingredients

Scale

2 lbs Apples (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
1/2 Lemon, juiced
1 cup Brown sugar, divided
1 tsp Ground cinnamon, divided
1/2 cup Whole wheat flour
1/2 cup Quick oats
1/2 cup Almond flour
2/3 cup Unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
1/4 cup Slivered almonds (optional)
Pinch of salt

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350ºF and lightly butter a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate.
In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared pie plate, spreading evenly.
Combine the remaining brown sugar, remaining cinnamon, whole wheat flour, oats, almond flour, and a pinch of salt in a bowl.
Add cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients and work with your hands or a pastry cutter until crumbly clumps form.
Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the apples and top with slivered almonds.
Bake for 45 minutes until the fruit is tender and the topping is golden and bubbling.
Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Ensure the butter is very cold to achieve the best texture for the crumble. You can substitute all-purpose flour for whole wheat if preferred. Serve warm with plain yogurt or vanilla ice cream if desired.
