Description
Crispy, golden onion rings baked to perfection using layers of seasoned flour and panko breadcrumbs. A healthier alternative with textbook crunch and no oil required.
Ingredients
2 large onions (yellow or sweet)
1 cup all-purpose flour (split into two bowls)
1/2 cup milk (dairy-free optional)
1 large egg
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp dried thyme
1 cup breadcrumbs (half panko for extra crunch)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 425°F (218°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper
Split flour into shallow bowls: 1/2 cup plain flour in first bowl, remaining flour in second bowl
In the second bowl, combine flour with milk, egg, cayenne, paprika, sea salt, garlic powder, onion powder, basil, oregano, black pepper, and thyme
Cut onions into 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick rings
Dip each onion ring into plain flour bowl, shaking off excess
Coat in the flour-batter mixture, letting excess drip off
Press into breadcrumbs to fully coat, patting gently
Arrange rings on baking sheets with 1-2 inch spacing
Bake 10 minutes, then flip and bake additional 7-10 minutes until evenly golden
Let cool 5 minutes before serving
Notes
Use panko breadcrumbs for maximum crispiness
Mist onion rings with water if flour doesn’t stick during coating
Chill battered rings for 10 minutes if they’re too runny
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 24 hours
