Description
A fresh, zesty, and easy-to-make condiment with ripe tomatoes, chiles, herbs, and citrus. Perfect for pairing with chips, tacos, or as a vibrant topping. Balanced acidity, spice, and tangy lime ensure authentic Mexican flavor in minutes.
Ingredients
2–3 medium fresh tomatoes (1.5 lbs total, stems removed)
1/2 medium red onion (use white onion if preferred)
2 serrano peppers or 1 jalapeño pepper (adjust seeds for heat level)
1 fresh lime (swap with lemon if needed)
1/2 cup chopped cilantro (use parsley if unavailable)
Kosher salt (start with 1/2 tsp) (use sea salt as substitute)
Instructions
Chop tomatoes, chiles, and onion roughly. Use gloves to handle chiles safely.
Add all ingredients to a food processor. Pulse 5-6 times to dice without puréeing.
Transfer to a serving bowl. Add lime juice, salt, pepper, oregano, and cumin. Taste and adjust seasonings.
Let salsa rest 30 minutes for flavors to meld. Serve with tortilla chips or as a taco topping.
Notes
Chill tomatoes first for firmer texture.
Adjust heat by removing/seeding chiles as needed.
Add 1 tbsp sugar if tomatoes are particularly acidic.
Salsa benefits from 30 minutes of resting before serving.
Avoid using store-bought citrus juice for best flavor.
Start with 1/2 tsp salt and add gradually for optimal balance.
