This Sausage and Potato Casserole is the ultimate comfort food, combining layers of tender potatoes, smoky kielbasa sausage, and melted cheddar cheese baked in a creamy, herbed sauce. It’s an easy, family-friendly meal that’s perfect for busy weeknights or cozy weekends.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 medium potatoes, sliced thinly
- 1 pound smoked sausage or kielbasa, cut in halves lengthwise and crosswise
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon dried dill weed
- 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Foil, for lining the baking dish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Line a 13×9-inch baking dish with aluminum foil, leaving enough overhang to seal later.
- Arrange sliced potatoes in overlapping layers on the bottom of the pan. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese evenly over the potatoes.
- Place the sliced sausage, cut side down, over the cheese layer.
- Top with the remaining cheese, followed by dill weed and caraway seeds.
- Pour milk evenly over the entire casserole.
- Seal the foil tightly around the pan to trap steam and moisture.
- Bake for 1 hour, or until the potatoes are tender and the casserole is bubbly.
- Remove from the oven, open the foil carefully, and allow it to rest for a few minutes before serving warm.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, open the foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.
- Try adding sautéed onions or bell peppers for more flavor and color.
- Use a mix of cheeses like Monterey Jack or Swiss for different textures.
- Leftovers reheat well in the oven or microwave and keep for up to 4 days in the fridge.
