Description

This Sausage and Potato Casserole is the ultimate comfort food, combining layers of tender potatoes, smoky kielbasa sausage, and melted cheddar cheese baked in a creamy, herbed sauce. It’s an easy, family-friendly meal that’s perfect for busy weeknights or cozy weekends.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium potatoes, sliced thinly
  • 1 pound smoked sausage or kielbasa, cut in halves lengthwise and crosswise
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill weed
  • 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Foil, for lining the baking dish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Line a 13×9-inch baking dish with aluminum foil, leaving enough overhang to seal later.
  3. Arrange sliced potatoes in overlapping layers on the bottom of the pan. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  4. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese evenly over the potatoes.
  5. Place the sliced sausage, cut side down, over the cheese layer.
  6. Top with the remaining cheese, followed by dill weed and caraway seeds.
  7. Pour milk evenly over the entire casserole.
  8. Seal the foil tightly around the pan to trap steam and moisture.
  9. Bake for 1 hour, or until the potatoes are tender and the casserole is bubbly.
  10. Remove from the oven, open the foil carefully, and allow it to rest for a few minutes before serving warm.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, open the foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.
  • Try adding sautéed onions or bell peppers for more flavor and color.
  • Use a mix of cheeses like Monterey Jack or Swiss for different textures.
  • Leftovers reheat well in the oven or microwave and keep for up to 4 days in the fridge.
