Description

This classic Philly Cheesesteak recipe features juicy, thinly sliced sirloin steak, caramelized onions, green bell peppers, and melted Swiss cheese all nestled in a soft hoagie roll. It’s the perfect comfort food, ready in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound beef sirloin, cut into thin 2-inch strips
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, julienned
  • 3 ounces Swiss cheese, thinly sliced
  • 4 hoagie rolls, split lengthwise

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix salt, black pepper, paprika, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, dried thyme, marjoram, and basil.
  2. Place sliced beef in a large bowl. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture over the beef and toss to coat evenly.
  3. Heat half of the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak and cook, stirring frequently, until desired doneness is reached. Remove steak from skillet and set aside.
  4. Add the remaining oil to the skillet. Sauté the sliced onion and green bell pepper until they are tender and caramelized.
  5. Preheat the oven broiler.
  6. Divide the cooked steak among the bottoms of the hoagie rolls.
  7. Top with caramelized onions and bell peppers.
  8. Place Swiss cheese slices on top of the vegetables and steak.
  9. Arrange the sandwiches on a baking sheet and broil until the cheese melts, about 1-2 minutes.
  10. Cover with the tops of the rolls, serve immediately, and enjoy.

Notes

  • For extra tenderness, partially freeze the steak before slicing.
  • To avoid soggy bread, lightly toast the hoagie rolls before assembling the sandwich.
  • Provolone, American cheese, or Cheese Whiz are great alternatives to Swiss cheese.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and reheated in the oven to maintain texture.
