Description

This Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp is a timeless dessert featuring tender baked apples topped with a buttery brown sugar oat crumble. Perfectly spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, this easy apple crisp recipe delivers comforting flavors and a golden, crunchy topping that pairs beautifully with ice cream or whipped cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 thinly sliced apples (about 6 cups)
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 2/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/3 cup softened butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8–10 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Place the sliced apples in the dish and sprinkle with 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Toss to coat evenly.
  3. In a bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add softened butter and blend with your fingers or a fork until crumbly.
  4. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake for 30–32 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  6. Cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Use a mix of Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples for balanced sweetness and tartness.
  • For a gluten-free version, replace all-purpose flour with oat flour.
  • If the butter is too firm, microwave it with the dry ingredients for 10–15 seconds to soften.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • Reheat individual servings in the microwave for 20–30 seconds before serving.
