Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef: provides a hearty, savory base
- 1 cup diced onion: adds depth and sweetness
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic: for aromatic richness
- 1 teaspoon salt: enhances overall flavor
- 1 teaspoon black pepper: adds mild heat
- 5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced: creates a soft, starchy layer
- 1 can (10.7 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup: provides creamy texture and umami
- 1 can (10.7 oz) condensed cream of chicken soup: adds savory flavor
- 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk: thickens the sauce and enriches taste
- 1/2 cup milk: balances richness
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese: melts into gooey, cheesy layers
- Cooking spray: prevents sticking in the baking dish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- In a large skillet, cook ground beef with diced onion and minced garlic until beef is browned. Drain excess fat. Season with salt and pepper.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the condensed mushroom soup, condensed chicken soup, evaporated milk, and regular milk until smooth.
- Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes on the bottom of the prepared dish.
- Top with half of the beef mixture, then pour over half of the soup mixture. Sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese.
- Repeat the layers: potatoes, beef, soup, and cheese.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil (tenting slightly to prevent sticking) and bake for 1 hour.
- Remove foil and bake uncovered for an additional 30 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Slice potatoes thin and evenly to ensure even cooking.
- Let casserole rest before serving to allow layers to set.
- Use pre-chopped onions and garlic to save prep time.
- Cover with foil to prevent over-browning, then uncover to brown the cheese topping.
