Description

This Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes recipe is the ultimate comfort food — rich, savory gravy with tender ground beef served over creamy mashed potatoes. It’s quick, affordable, and family-friendly, perfect for busy weeknights or cozy weekends.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes: peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces for creamy mashed potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon salt: enhances the potato flavor
  • 3 tablespoons butter: adds richness and smooth texture
  • 1/2 cup whole milk: makes the mashed potatoes creamy
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder: adds subtle savory depth
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper: to taste
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch: thickens the gravy
  • 1 3/4 cups beef broth (divided): forms the rich gravy base
  • 1 pound ground beef: hearty protein for the dish
  • 1/2 cup chopped white onion: adds sweetness and aromatic flavor
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder: enhances savory notes
  • 1 teaspoon salt: balances flavors
  • 1/41/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper: seasoning for taste

Instructions

  1. Fill a medium pot with water and add 1 tablespoon salt. Stir and add the potatoes. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Boil potatoes for 5 to 8 minutes or until fork-tender.
  3. While the potatoes cook, heat butter and milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until the butter melts.
  4. Drain the cooked potatoes and mash them to your desired consistency.
  5. Gradually stir in the butter-milk mixture. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Set aside.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and 1/4 cup of beef broth. Set aside.
  7. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned and no longer pink, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess liquid.
  8. Add remaining beef broth, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes until onions are tender.
  9. Slowly whisk in the cornstarch mixture. Increase heat and bring to a boil. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens.
  10. To serve, spoon mashed potatoes onto plates and top generously with ground beef and gravy. Serve warm with extra gravy if desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Instant mashed potatoes work in place of homemade for extra convenience.
  • Canned beef gravy can be used if you prefer a shortcut.
  • Add sautéed mushrooms with the onions for a stroganoff-style twist.
  • Store leftovers in airtight containers for up to 3 days; reheat with a splash of broth if needed.
