Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes: peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces for creamy mashed potatoes
- 1 tablespoon salt: enhances the potato flavor
- 3 tablespoons butter: adds richness and smooth texture
- 1/2 cup whole milk: makes the mashed potatoes creamy
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder: adds subtle savory depth
- Salt and freshly cracked black pepper: to taste
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch: thickens the gravy
- 1 3/4 cups beef broth (divided): forms the rich gravy base
- 1 pound ground beef: hearty protein for the dish
- 1/2 cup chopped white onion: adds sweetness and aromatic flavor
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder: enhances savory notes
- 1 teaspoon salt: balances flavors
- 1/4–1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper: seasoning for taste
Instructions
- Fill a medium pot with water and add 1 tablespoon salt. Stir and add the potatoes. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Boil potatoes for 5 to 8 minutes or until fork-tender.
- While the potatoes cook, heat butter and milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until the butter melts.
- Drain the cooked potatoes and mash them to your desired consistency.
- Gradually stir in the butter-milk mixture. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and 1/4 cup of beef broth. Set aside.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned and no longer pink, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess liquid.
- Add remaining beef broth, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes until onions are tender.
- Slowly whisk in the cornstarch mixture. Increase heat and bring to a boil. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens.
- To serve, spoon mashed potatoes onto plates and top generously with ground beef and gravy. Serve warm with extra gravy if desired.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- Instant mashed potatoes work in place of homemade for extra convenience.
- Canned beef gravy can be used if you prefer a shortcut.
- Add sautéed mushrooms with the onions for a stroganoff-style twist.
- Store leftovers in airtight containers for up to 3 days; reheat with a splash of broth if needed.
